“I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith. From now on, the crown of righteousness is stored up for me, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day; and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing.”

What's really going on
Preach the word
The chapter opens, "I command you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his Kingdom: preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort with all patience and teaching." (4:1-2) (tap preach). Then it says, "For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts, and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn away to fables." (4:3-4) (tap sound, itching, fables). And then: "But you be sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry." (4:5) (tap suffer hardship, evangelist, fulfill). These notes give the verses as the WEB has them. They tie "the time" (4:3) to no date, age or event, and apply these verses to no preacher, teacher, church or time today.

The Greek word behind it
πληροφορέωplerophoreosay play-rof-or-EH-o
Strong's: "to carry out fully (in evidence), i.e. completely assure (or convince), entirely accomplish". Thayer lists 4:5 and 4:17 where he gives "to cause a thing to be shown to the full". "But you be sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry." (4:5), and "But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, that through me the message might be fully proclaimed" (4:17): behind fulfill and fully proclaimed is this one verb, and 2 Timothy has it only in these two verses (counted in RP2018; both verses have it in all eight editions TAGNT compares). Favor's Romans 4 studies it where the WEB has fully assured (Romans 4:21).
