2 Timothy 3 Bible study: God-breathed

The word behind God-breathed stands in the New Testament only once, in 2 Timothy 3:16, and the next verse says to what end: "that each person who belongs to God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." (3:17).

What's really going on

But know this

In the text

The chapter opens: "But know this: that in the last days, grievous times will come." (3:1) "For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy," (3:2) "without natural affection, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, not lovers of good," (3:3) "traitors, headstrong, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God," (3:4) "holding a form of godliness but having denied its power. Turn away from these, also." (3:5) "For some of these are people who creep into houses and take captive gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts," (3:6) "always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." (3:7) "Even as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind, who concerning the faith are rejected." (3:8) "But they will proceed no further. For their folly will be evident to all men, as theirs also came to be." (3:9). These notes give 3:1-9 as the WEB has them, and add nothing to their words. They don't say when the last days are, and tie them to no date, age or event, then or now. They name no one, then or now, as the men of 3:2-5, as the people of 3:6, or as those of 3:8, and they say nothing of any women beyond the verse's own words. The Bible names Jannes and Jambres only here, and the letter doesn't say who they were; these notes don't either.

The Greek word behind it

θεόπνευστοςtheopneustossay theh-OP-nyoo-stos

Strong's: "divinely breathed in". "Every Scripture is God-breathed" (3:16): behind God-breathed is this one word. The New Testament has it only here (in all eight editions TAGNT compares). The verse goes on to say what every Scripture is profitable for, and the next verse says to what end (3:17).
