2 Timothy 4 · a question people ask

"For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine" (4:3). Who are they?

In the text

The letter doesn't say. Its words are, "For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts, and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn away to fables." (4:3-4). It names no one and gives no date, and these notes don't either. They tie the words to no date, age or event, and apply them to no preacher, teacher, church, movement or people, then or now.

The verses

“For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts, and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn away to fables.”

2 Timothy 4: Preach the word

In 2 Timothy 4, the letter tells Timothy to "fulfill your ministry" (4:5), and its I says, "But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, that through me the message might be fully proclaimed" (4:17): behind fulfill and fully proclaimed is one Greek verb. And the letter whose greeting gives "Grace, mercy, and peace" (1:2) says near its very end, "Grace be with you." (4:22).
