2 Thessalonians 3 Bible study: The Lord is faithful

2 Thessalonians ends as it began, with grace and peace (1:2, 3:16, 3:18). And in its last chapter, three words Strong's ties together stand side by side: "not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful" (3:2-3), then "We have confidence in the Lord concerning you" (3:4).

Favor is a Bible study app that explains every chapter as you read: the words behind the words, what most readers miss, and how it all leads to Jesus.

The Greek word behind it

πιστόςpistossay pis-TOS

Strong's: "objectively, trustworthy; subjectively, trustful". "But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one." (3:3): behind faithful is this word, and 2 Thessalonians has it only here (in all eight editions TAGNT compares). Here is what almost everyone misses: the verse before ends, "for not all have faith" (3:2), and behind faith there is the noun pistis (G4102). Strong's gives both words as formed "from G3982", and G3982 is the verb behind We have confidence in the next verse, "We have confidence in the Lord concerning you" (3:4). Favor's Luke 16 studies this word in Luke.
