2 Chronicles 26 Bible study: Helped until he was strong

2 Kings says only, "The LORD struck the king" (2 Kings 15:5). 2 Chronicles tells what came before: a king who "was marvelously helped until he was strong" (26:15) went into the temple to burn incense, and the leprosy broke out on his forehead "beside the altar of incense" (26:19).

What's really going on

As long as he sought the LORD

In the text

"All the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the place of his father Amaziah" (26:1). "He did that which was right in the LORD’s eyes, according to all that his father Amaziah had done" (26:4). Then: "He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the vision of God; and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him prosper" (26:5) (tap seek and prosper). In Hebrew seek and sought are one verb, darash, and the verse has bimei, "in the days of", twice: before Zechariah, and before he sought, where the WEB has as long as. The chapter tells nothing more of this Zechariah and names no father for him. He is kept apart from "Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest" (24:20), who was stoned in Joash's day (24:21-22). Joash's reign had been told in the same way: "Joash did that which was right in the LORD’s eyes all the days of Jehoiada the priest" (24:2).

The Hebrew word behind it

חֶזְקָהchezqahsay khez-KAH

Brown-Driver-Briggs: "strength, force". Strong's: "prevailing power". "But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up" (26:16): in Hebrew when he was strong is one word, strength with his and as. The word comes four times in the Hebrew Bible and twice in 2 Chronicles. The other is Rehoboam: "When the kingdom of Rehoboam was established and he was strong, he abandoned the LORD’s law" (12:1), with the same Hebrew word. The verse before 26:16 says Uzziah "was marvelously helped until he was strong" (26:15), where strong is the verb chazaq, not this word.
