2 Chronicles 25 Bible study: Much more than this

Only 2 Chronicles tells of the hundred talents: when Amaziah asked what to do about the silver he had paid for Israel's soldiers, the man of God said, "The LORD is able to give you much more than this" (25:9). And the king who did right "but not with a perfect heart" (25:2) went on to set up the gods of the people he had just defeated as his own (25:14).

What's really going on

Right, but not with a perfect heart

In the text

Amaziah "was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem" (25:1). His verdict is one short line: "He did that which was right in the LORD’s eyes, but not with a perfect heart" (25:2) (tap perfect). 2 Kings tells the same reign with another measure: "He did that which was right in the LORD’s eyes, yet not like David his father" (2 Kings 14:3). 2 Chronicles has used the word before. Of Asa it said, "the heart of Asa was perfect all his days" (15:17), and Hanani the seer told Asa that the LORD shows himself strong "in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him" (16:9). Of Amaziah, the verse says not. It doesn't explain, but the chapter goes on to tell that he brought the gods of the children of Seir and bowed down before them (25:14), and it dates the plot against him "from the time that Amaziah turned away from following the LORD" (25:27).

The Hebrew word behind it

שָׁלֵםshalemsay sha-LEIM

Brown-Driver-Briggs: "complete, safe, at peace". Strong's: "complete (literally or figuratively)". "He did that which was right in the LORD’s eyes, but not with a perfect heart" (25:2). The Hebrew of 2 Chronicles has it five times. It was said of Asa, "the heart of Asa was perfect all his days" (15:17), and Hanani told Asa that the LORD shows himself strong "in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him" (16:9). 1 Kings uses it of Solomon: "his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father was" (1 Kings 11:4). 2 Kings, telling Amaziah's reign, doesn't use it; it says "yet not like David his father" (2 Kings 14:3).
