2 Chronicles 26 · a question people ask
Is Uzziah the same king as 2 Kings' Azariah?
The Bible names this king both ways. 2 Chronicles says, "All the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the place of his father Amaziah" (26:1), and 2 Kings has the same words with the other name: "All the people of Judah took Azariah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the place of his father Amaziah" (2 Kings 14:21). 2 Kings calls Jotham's father "Azariah son of Amaziah king of Judah" (2 Kings 15:1), and also says, "Jotham the son of Uzziah king of Judah began to reign" (2 Kings 15:32). 1 Chronicles lists "Amaziah his son, Azariah his son, Jotham his son" (1 Chronicles 3:12), and Matthew has "Joram became the father of Uzziah. Uzziah became the father of Jotham" (Matthew 1:8-9). Isaiah, Hosea and Amos date their words "in the days of Uzziah" (Isaiah 1:1; Hosea 1:1; Amos 1:1). None of these verses says why there are two names, and these notes don't guess. In this chapter the priest who goes in after the king is also named Azariah (26:17); nothing joins him to the king.
