Ephesians 6 · a question people ask

"Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord" (6:21). Who was he?

In the text

The letter says only what 6:21-22 say. He is "the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord", and he "will make known to you all things" (6:21). "I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know our state and that he may comfort your hearts." (6:22). The letter says nothing more about him, and these notes don't either.

The verses

“But that you also may know my affairs, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will make known to you all things. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know our state and that he may comfort your hearts.”

Ephesians 6: Strong in the Lord

The letter's last turn begins, "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might" (6:10), and behind the strength of his might are the same three Greek words as in the prayer of chapter 1 (1:19). The letter that opened "Grace to you and peace" (1:2) closes with peace (6:23) and grace (6:24).
