Revelation 7 Bible study: Holding the four winds

The four angels hold the winds "so that no wind would blow on the earth, or on the sea, or on any tree" (7:1), and the angel with the seal cries, "Don’t harm the earth, the sea, or the trees, until we have sealed the bondservants of our God on their foreheads!" (7:3). Earth, sea and trees stand in both verses: kept from the wind, and kept from harm until the sealing.

What's really going on

Holding the four winds

In the text

The chapter opens: "After this, I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, so that no wind would blow on the earth, or on the sea, or on any tree." (7:1) (tap corners, winds, blow and tree). Then: "I saw another angel ascend from the sunrise, having the seal of the living God. He cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was given to harm the earth and the sea," (7:2) (tap sunrise and seal) "saying, “Don’t harm the earth, the sea, or the trees, until we have sealed the bondservants of our God on their foreheads!”" (7:3) (tap sealed and foreheads). These notes say no more of the four angels, the other angel, the winds or the seal than these verses' own words.

Where the Old Testament leads here

Every nation before the Lamb

Interpretation

Genesis 10:32leads toRevelation 7:9-10

Genesis 10 lists the nations by families, languages, lands and nations. Revelation sees "a great multitude… out of every nation and of all tribes, peoples, and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb". Revelation doesn't cite Genesis 10, so this link is a reading of the whole Bible's story, held by many: it runs through God's promise that all the families of the earth will be blessed (12:3), which Paul calls the Good News (Galatians 3:8). Others read Genesis 10 simply as a record of where the peoples came from, without a link forward.

The Greek word behind it

σφραγίζωsphragizosay sfrag-EED-zo

Strong's: "to stamp (with a signet or private mark)". "until we have sealed the bondservants of our God on their foreheads" (7:3): behind sealed is this verb. Behind seal in 7:2 is the noun it comes from (tap seal).
