What's really going on

Seven angels having the seven last plagues

In the text

John says, "I saw another great and marvelous sign in the sky: seven angels having the seven last plagues, for in them God’s wrath is finished." (15:1) (tap marvelous, plagues, wrath and finished). The rest of the chapter tells what John saw next: a sea of glass and those standing on it, their song, the temple opened, the seven angels coming out, the bowls given to them, and the temple filled with smoke. These notes identify no one and nothing in this chapter with any person, people, power, nation, church or event, give no time for anything in it, and apply none of it to anyone, then or now.

Where the Old Testament leads here

The song of Moses and the song of the Lamb

Interpretation

Exodus 15:1leads toRevelation 15:3

Israel "believed in the LORD and in his servant Moses" (14:31), and "Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the LORD" (15:1). In Revelation, John sees "those who overcame the beast" standing "on the sea of glass" (Revelation 15:2): "They sang the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, ‘Great and marvelous are your works, Lord God, the Almighty! Righteous and true are your ways, you King of the nations’" (Revelation 15:3). Their song asks, "Who wouldn’t fear you, Lord, and glorify your name? For you only are holy" (Revelation 15:4). Revelation doesn't say which song of Moses it means. Moses also spoke a song near the end of his life (Deuteronomy 31:30), which says of God, "all his ways are just" (Deuteronomy 32:4). Many hear this song beside the sea in Revelation's song by the sea of glass; others hear Deuteronomy 32, or both.

The Greek word behind it

πληγήplegesay play-GAY

Strong's: "a stroke; by implication, a wound; figuratively, a calamity". "seven angels having the seven last plagues" (15:1): behind plagues is this noun, as it is in "The seven angels who had the seven plagues came out" (15:6) and "until the seven plagues of the seven angels would be finished" (15:8).
