Revelation 14 Bible study: A new song

The sound John heard from heaven was "like the sound of many waters and like the sound of a great thunder", and it was "like that of harpists playing on their harps" (14:2).

What's really going on

The Lamb standing on Mount Zion

In the text

John says, "I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him a number, one hundred forty-four thousand, having his name and the name of his Father written on their foreheads." (14:1) "I heard a sound from heaven like the sound of many waters and like the sound of a great thunder. The sound which I heard was like that of harpists playing on their harps." (14:2) (tap harpists and playing) "They sing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the one hundred forty-four thousand, those who had been redeemed out of the earth." (14:3) (tap song and learn). The heads-up for leaders names 14:4. Here it is as the WEB has it: "These are those who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are those who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These were redeemed by Jesus from among men, the first fruits to God and to the Lamb." (14:4). These notes quote 14:4 once, here, and explain its first sentence no further than its own words. Then: "In their mouth was found no lie, for they are blameless." (14:5) (tap blameless). These notes give "one hundred forty-four thousand" (14:1, 14:3) as the verses have it, and count nothing by it. They say no more of Mount Zion, of the one hundred forty-four thousand or of the names on their foreheads than these verses' own words. They identify no one and nothing in this chapter with any person, people, power, place, nation, church or event, give no time for anything in it, and apply none of it to anyone, then or now.

The Greek word behind it

ᾠδήodesay o-DAY

Strong's gives this noun as "the general term for any words sung". "They sing a new song" and "No one could learn the song" (14:3): behind song, both times, is this noun (in all eight editions TAGNT compares).
