Revelation 14 · a question people ask

John sees "one hundred forty-four thousand" with the Lamb (14:1), and 14:4 calls them first fruits. Who are they?

In the text

Here is some of what the chapter says of them. They sing a new song, and "No one could learn the song except the one hundred forty-four thousand, those who had been redeemed out of the earth" (14:3). Of them, 14:5 says, "In their mouth was found no lie, for they are blameless." 14:4 says more of them, and the section The Lamb standing on Mount Zion quotes it. Beyond these words, the chapter doesn't say who they are, and these notes don't either.

The verses

“I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him a number, one hundred forty-four thousand, having his name and the name of his Father written on their foreheads.”
Revelation 14:1 · World English Bible
“They sing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the one hundred forty-four thousand, those who had been redeemed out of the earth. These are those who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are those who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These were redeemed by Jesus from among men, the first fruits to God and to the Lamb. In their mouth was found no lie, for they are blameless.”

Revelation 14: A new song

The sound John heard from heaven was "like the sound of many waters and like the sound of a great thunder", and it was "like that of harpists playing on their harps" (14:2).
