Revelation 10 Bible study: A little open book

The angel stands "on the sea and on the land" (10:5), and swears by him "who created heaven and the things that are in it, the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it" (10:6). Standing on the sea and the land, he swears by the one who created the sea and the earth and everything in them.

What's really going on

A mighty angel

In the text

John says, "I saw a mighty angel coming down out of the sky, clothed with a cloud. A rainbow was on his head. His face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire." (10:1) (tap rainbow and pillars). "He had in his hand a little open book. He set his right foot on the sea, and his left on the land." (10:2) "He cried with a loud voice, as a lion roars. When he cried, the seven thunders uttered their voices." (10:3) (tap roars and thunders). "When the seven thunders sounded, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from the sky saying, “Seal up the things which the seven thunders said, and don’t write them.”" (10:4) These notes say no more of the angel or of the seven thunders than these verses' own words.

The Greek word behind it

βιβλιαρίδιονbibliaridionsay bib-lee-ar-ID-ee-on

Strong's: "a booklet", and it calls the word "a diminutive of G975", a noun Favor's Revelation 5 studies. "I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little book" (10:9): behind little book is this noun, in all eight editions TAGNT compares. In every one of those editions, the New Testament has it only in this chapter.

  2. 2Before John ate the little book, the angel told him what it would do: "It will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey." (10:9) Then John took it and ate it (10:10). When has knowing ahead of time how something would go made a difference to you?
  3. 3The angel swore by him "who created heaven and the things that are in it, the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it" (10:6). How does it change the way you look at the sky, the land or the sea to remember who created them?
