Revelation 10 · a question people ask

"Seal up the things which the seven thunders said, and don’t write them." (10:4) What did the seven thunders say?

In the text

Here is what the chapter says of them. When the angel cried "with a loud voice, as a lion roars" (10:3), then "the seven thunders uttered their voices" (10:3). John says, "When the seven thunders sounded, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from the sky saying, “Seal up the things which the seven thunders said, and don’t write them.”" (10:4) So John was about to write, and the voice told him to seal up what they said and not to write it. Beyond these words, the chapter doesn't say what the seven thunders said, or who or what they are, and these notes don't either.

The verses

“He cried with a loud voice, as a lion roars. When he cried, the seven thunders uttered their voices. When the seven thunders sounded, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from the sky saying, “Seal up the things which the seven thunders said, and don’t write them.””

Revelation 10: A little open book

The angel stands "on the sea and on the land" (10:5), and swears by him "who created heaven and the things that are in it, the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it" (10:6). Standing on the sea and the land, he swears by the one who created the sea and the earth and everything in them.
