Leviticus 26 Bible study: If you walk in my statutes

Leviticus 26's warnings take back its blessings one by one, and its word for walking "contrary" (26:21, 26:24) appears nowhere else in the Hebrew Bible. Yet it doesn't end there: after "If they confess" comes "I will remember my covenant" (26:40-42), and "I will not reject them" (26:44).

Favor is a Bible study app that explains every chapter as you read: the words behind the words, what most readers miss, and how it all leads to Jesus.

What's really going on

The blessings, taken back

In the text

Read the warnings beside the blessings and you'll find the warnings take the blessings back one by one. "The land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit" (26:4) becomes "your land won’t yield its increase, neither will the trees of the land yield their fruit" (26:20). "You shall eat your bread to the full" (26:5) becomes "You shall eat, and not be satisfied" (26:26). "No one will make you afraid" (26:6) becomes "you will flee when no one pursues you" (26:17). "Neither shall the sword go through your land" (26:6) becomes "I will bring a sword upon you" (26:25). And "my soul won’t abhor you" (26:11) becomes "my soul will abhor you" (26:30).

Where it leads to Jesus

I will dwell in them and walk in them

In the text

Leviticus 26:12leads to2 Corinthians 6:16

The LORD promises, "I will set my tent among you" (26:11), "I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you will be my people" (26:12). Paul writes to the church at Corinth about those who are "in Christ" (2 Corinthians 5:17), reconciled to God "through Jesus Christ" (2 Corinthians 5:18): "For you are a temple of the living God. Even as God said, ‘I will dwell in them and walk in them. I will be their God and they will be my people’" (2 Corinthians 6:16). Paul doesn't name the book. Ezekiel has "My tent also will be with them. I will be their God, and they will be my people" (Ezekiel 37:27), but the walking is in Leviticus 26:12.

The Hebrew word behind it

קְרִיqerisay ke-REE

Brown-Driver-Briggs: "opposition, contrariness". Strong's: "hostile encounter". It comes seven times in the Hebrew Bible, all in this chapter. Four times it is the people who walk contrary: "walk contrary to me" (26:21, 26:23, 26:27), and "walked contrary to me" (26:40). Three times it is the LORD: "I will also walk contrary to you" (26:24), "I will walk contrary to you" (26:28), and "I also walked contrary to them" (26:41). The chapter's blessings had said, "If you walk in my statutes" (26:3), and "I will walk among you" (26:12).
