Genesis 19 Bible study: Out of Sodom

Lot took in two angels, and the men of Sodom surrounded his house. When he lingered, the angels took him by the hand, "the LORD being merciful to him", and the Bible's first use of the word for loving kindness is Lot's, speaking of that rescue. The LORD overthrew the cities, Lot's wife looked back, and Lot was sent out because God remembered Abraham.

What's really going on

Two guests at the gate

In the text

"The two angels came to Sodom at evening. Lot sat in the gate of Sodom" (19:1). Like Abraham in chapter 18, Lot bows to the ground, invites them to wash their feet and gives them a meal (18:2-8; 19:1-3). When they say they will stay in the street, "He urged them greatly, and they came in with him" (19:2-3).

Where it leads to Jesus

As in the days of Lot

In the text

Genesis 19:24leads toLuke 17:28-30

Jesus compares the day he is revealed to the day Sodom fell: "in the day that Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and sulfur from the sky and destroyed them all. It will be the same way in the day that the Son of Man is revealed." Peter uses the same event: "the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation".

The Hebrew word behind it

חֶסֶדchesedsay KHE-sed

Brown-Driver-Briggs gives "goodness, kindness", and of God, "kindness, lovingkindness in condescending to the needs of his creatures". Its first appearance in the Bible is here, in Lot's words: "you have magnified your loving kindness, which you have shown to me in saving my life" (19:19). It appears 11 times in Genesis. When the LORD proclaims his name to Moses, he is "abundant in loving kindness and truth" (Exodus 34:6), and the psalm repeats, "his loving kindness endures forever" (Psalm 136:1).
