Genesis 19 · a question people ask
What was Sodom's sin?
Genesis says "the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinners against the LORD" (13:13) and that "their sin is very grievous" (18:20), and this chapter shows the men of the city surrounding the house and calling out, "Bring them out to us, that we may have sex with them" (19:4-9). Other passages add more. Ezekiel: "this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and prosperous ease was in her and in her daughters. She also didn’t strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. They were arrogant and committed abomination before me" (Ezekiel 16:49-50). Jude says Sodom and Gomorrah, "having in the same way as these given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are shown as an example" (Jude 7). Peter: Lot was "very distressed by the lustful life of the wicked" and "seeing and hearing lawless deeds" (2 Peter 2:7-8). The Bible names more than one thing, and each passage is given here in its own words.
