Exodus 24 Bible study: The blood of the covenant
Israel said yes to the LORD's words three times (19:8, 24:3, 24:7), and Moses sprinkled them with "the blood of the covenant" (24:8). In the World English Bible those words appear again only in Hebrews (9:20, 10:29). At supper Jesus took the cup and said, "This is my blood of the new covenant" (Mark 14:24).

What's really going on
They said yes three times
When Moses first set the LORD's words before the elders (19:7), the people answered, "All that the LORD has spoken we will do" (19:8). In this chapter they say it twice more. Moses "told the people all the LORD’s words, and all the ordinances" (24:3), the ordinances that began at 21:1, and "all the people answered with one voice" (24:3): "All the words which the LORD has spoken will we do" (24:3). Then "Moses wrote all the LORD’s words" (24:4), and "He took the book of the covenant and read it in the hearing of the people" (24:7). Their answer: "We will do all that the LORD has said, and be obedient" (24:7). Half the blood had already gone on the altar (24:6); only now did Moses sprinkle the rest on the people (24:8).
Where it leads to Jesus
The first covenant, dedicated with blood
Exodus 24:8leads toHebrews 9:15-20
Moses sprinkled the people and said, "Look, this is the blood of the covenant, which the LORD has made with you concerning all these words" (24:8). Hebrews gives his words as "This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you" (Hebrews 9:20), worded a little differently from Exodus, and calls it the first covenant: "Therefore even the first covenant has not been dedicated without blood" (Hebrews 9:18). Of Jesus it says, "he is the mediator of a new covenant, since a death has occurred for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant" (Hebrews 9:15).

The Hebrew word behind it
בְּרִיתberitsay be-REET
Brown-Driver-Briggs: "covenant"; Strong's: "a compact". Here it names "the book of the covenant" (24:7) and "the blood of the covenant" (24:8). Exodus first uses it when "God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob" (2:24), and at this mountain God said, "if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own possession from among all peoples" (19:5). The verb in 24:8, "which the LORD has made with you", is karat (H3772); Strong's gives "to cut (off, down or asunder)" and, "specifically, to covenant".

Exodus 24 Bible study questions
- 1Israel promised to do all the LORD's words (24:3), then made a calf while Moses was still on the mountain (32:1-8). Have you promised God more than you could keep? What does Jesus' "new covenant in my blood" (Luke 22:20) mean to you there?
- 2The elders "saw God, and ate and drank" (24:11). Jesus gave his disciples the cup at a meal. When has sharing a table with other believers been a place where God felt near to you?
- 3The cloud covered the mountain for six days before the LORD called to Moses (24:16), and down below, when the people saw that Moses delayed, they asked Aaron to make them gods (32:1). What helps you keep going when God seems slow?
