Exodus 24 · a question people ask
Could Israel keep what they promised?
They promised three times (19:8, 24:3, 24:7). Then, while Moses was on the mountain, "the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain" (32:1), and Aaron "made it a molded calf" (32:4). The LORD told Moses, "They have turned away quickly out of the way which I commanded them" (32:8). In Deuteronomy, Moses recalls the people saying at Horeb, "we will hear it, and do it" (Deuteronomy 5:27), and the LORD's answer: "They have well said all that they have spoken. Oh that there were such a heart in them that they would fear me and keep all my commandments always" (Deuteronomy 5:28-29). Through Jeremiah the LORD later spoke of the covenant made when he brought Israel out of Egypt, "which covenant of mine they broke" (Jeremiah 31:32), and promised a new one: "I will put my law in their inward parts, and I will write it in their heart" (Jeremiah 31:33).

“Go near, and hear all that the LORD our God shall say, and tell us all that the LORD our God tells you; and we will hear it, and do it.” The LORD heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me; and the LORD said to me, “I have heard the voice of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They have well said all that they have spoken. Oh that there were such a heart in them that they would fear me and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them and with their children forever!”
