2 Chronicles 22 Bible study: Hidden in God's house

2 Chronicles gives two causes for Ahaziah's fall side by side: his counselors, "to his destruction" (22:4), and God (22:7), with two different Hebrew words. And when all the royal offspring were destroyed, one son was stealthily rescued by his father's sister, a priest's wife, and kept "hidden in God’s house six years" (22:12).

What's really going on

Counselors to his destruction

In the text

2 Kings and 2 Chronicles both say Ahaziah went the way of Ahab's house. 2 Kings gives a family reason: "for he was the son-in-law of Ahab’s house" (2 Kings 8:27). 2 Chronicles names who counseled him. First his mother, "Athaliah the daughter of Omri" (22:2): "He also walked in the ways of Ahab’s house, because his mother was his counselor in acting wickedly" (22:3). Then Ahab's house itself: "they were his counselors after the death of his father, to his destruction" (22:4). And he listened: "He also followed their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth Gilead" (22:5). Three verses in a row use the Hebrew words for counsel (tap counselor and counsel). Ahaziah's father had gone the same way: Jehoram "walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as did Ahab’s house, for he had Ahab’s daughter as his wife" (21:6).

The Hebrew word behind it

תְּבוּסָהtevusahsay te-voo-SAH

Brown-Driver-Briggs: "down-treading = ruin, downfall". Strong's: "a treading down, i.e. ruin". "Now the destruction of Ahaziah was of God, in that he went to Joram" (22:7). This is the only place the Hebrew Bible uses the word. It is not the word of 22:4, where Ahab's house were his counselors "to his destruction" (22:4): that is mashchit (tap destruction in 22:4). The chapter names both, the counselors and God.
