2 Chronicles 22 · a question people ask

Where did Ahaziah die, and where was he buried?

In the text

2 Chronicles says, "He sought Ahaziah, and they caught him (now he was hiding in Samaria), and they brought him to Jehu and killed him; and they buried him" (22:9). 2 Kings tells it this way: "They struck him at the ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. He fled to Megiddo, and died there" (2 Kings 9:27), and "His servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his tomb with his fathers in David’s city" (2 Kings 9:28). 2 Chronicles doesn't say where he was killed or where he was buried, and 2 Kings 9 doesn't mention Samaria. Neither book explains how the two accounts fit together, and these notes don't try to. Both tell of his death, and both say he was buried (22:9; 2 Kings 9:27-28). The books also tell differently who was with him: 2 Kings 10's honest question sets "We are the brothers of Ahaziah" (2 Kings 10:13) beside 22:8.

The verses

“When Jehu was executing judgment on Ahab’s house, he found the princes of Judah and the sons of the brothers of Ahaziah serving Ahaziah, and killed them. He sought Ahaziah, and they caught him (now he was hiding in Samaria), and they brought him to Jehu and killed him; and they buried him, for they said, “He is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart.” The house of Ahaziah had no power to hold the kingdom.”
2 Chronicles 22:8-9 · World English Bible
“But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. Jehu followed after him, and said, “Strike him also in the chariot!” They struck him at the ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. He fled to Megiddo, and died there. His servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his tomb with his fathers in David’s city.”
2 Kings 9:27-28 · World English Bible

2 Chronicles 22: Hidden in God's house

2 Chronicles gives two causes for Ahaziah's fall side by side: his counselors, "to his destruction" (22:4), and God (22:7), with two different Hebrew words. And when all the royal offspring were destroyed, one son was stealthily rescued by his father's sister, a priest's wife, and kept "hidden in God’s house six years" (22:12).
