Psalm 62 · a question people ask
"Also to you, Lord, belongs loving kindness, for you reward every man according to his work" (62:12). How is repaying people for their work loving kindness?
The verse joins the two with for, ki in Hebrew, and doesn't explain more (tap loving kindness and reward). What it says is that "power belongs to God" (62:11), that loving kindness belongs to the Lord too, and that he repays every man according to his work (62:12). It doesn't say whom it has in mind, or how the repaying and the loving kindness fit together. Paul writes of God, who "will pay back to everyone according to their works" (Romans 2:6), words close to this verse's; Romans doesn't say which Scripture it means, and Proverbs asks, "Shall he not give to every man according to his work?" (Proverbs 24:12). Psalm 28's honest question sets these verses beside its own prayer, "Give them according to their work" (Psalm 28:4); these notes don't say more than 62:12 does.
The verses
“God has spoken once; twice I have heard this, that power belongs to God. Also to you, Lord, belongs loving kindness, for you reward every man according to his work.”
“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the Good News of God,”
“But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath, revelation, and of the righteous judgment of God, who “will pay back to everyone according to their works:””
“If you say, “Behold, we didn’t know this,” doesn’t he who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, doesn’t he know it? Shall he not give to every man according to his work?”
