Matthew 2 · a question people ask
Matthew says "he will be called a Nazarene" (2:23) was spoken through the prophets. Which prophet said it?
Matthew doesn't name one. Joseph "came and lived in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets that he will be called a Nazarene" (2:23). Matthew says the prophets, not one prophet, and gives no words in quotation marks. In the WEB the word Nazarene comes only in the New Testament, and no verse of the WEB's Old Testament says that anyone "will be called a Nazarene". Favor doesn't supply a passage Matthew doesn't name. What the verse does say is that Joseph "came and lived in a city called Nazareth", and that Matthew sets beside it the words "he will be called a Nazarene" (2:23). Later in Matthew someone says of Peter, "This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth" (26:71), and in Greek of Nazareth there is the word Matthew uses here (tap Nazarene).
