Matthew 19 · a question people ask

What is "the regeneration" in 19:28?

In the text

Here are Jesus's words: "Most certainly I tell you that you who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on the throne of his glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel." (19:28). In the WEB's Gospels, this is the only verse with the word regeneration, and Jesus doesn't explain it, or the twelve thrones, in this chapter. Christians read it in more than one way, and these notes don't say what it is or when it will be.

The verses

“Then Peter answered, “Behold, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” Jesus said to them, “Most certainly I tell you that you who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on the throne of his glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

Matthew 19: With God all things are possible

When Peter says, "we have left everything and followed you" (19:27), his two verbs are the two Matthew used of Simon and Andrew by the sea of Galilee: "They immediately left their nets and followed him" (4:20). In the Greek they are the same verbs, and Thayer lists the two verses together.
