Luke 16 · a question people ask
In what Jesus tells, "His lord commended the dishonest manager" (16:8). Was Jesus praising dishonesty?
Here is what the verses say. The one who commends the manager is "His lord" (16:8), and the verse gives the reason: "because he had done wisely" (16:8). The same verse calls him "the dishonest manager" (16:8), and goes on, "for the children of this world are, in their own generation, wiser than the children of the light" (16:8). Then Jesus says, "I tell you, make for yourselves friends by means of unrighteous mammon, so that when you fail, they may receive you into the eternal tents." (16:9). His words go on to being faithful in a very little and in much (16:10-12), and end, "You aren’t able to serve God and Mammon." (16:13). Christians read these words in more than one way. These notes quote them as they stand, choose no reading, and apply them to no one's money or work.
