John 10 · a question people ask
They said, "If you are the Christ, tell us plainly" (10:24), and Jesus answered, "I told you" (10:25). When had he told them?
The chapter doesn't say which words he means. His answer goes on, "I told you, and you don’t believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name, these testify about me" (10:25), and "But you don’t believe, because you are not of my sheep, as I told you" (10:26). Twice he says "I told you", and neither time does the verse say when. These notes don't supply the earlier words.
The verses
“The Jews therefore came around him and said to him, “How long will you hold us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you don’t believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name, these testify about me. But you don’t believe, because you are not of my sheep, as I told you.”
