Hebrews 8 · a question people ask

"For if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all" (8:4). Why not?

In the text

The verse gives its own reason: "seeing there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law" (8:4). The verse before says, "every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices" (8:3). These notes say no more than these words.

The verses

“For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this high priest also have something to offer. For if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, seeing there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law,”

Hebrews 8: Mediator of a better covenant

Hebrews names its main point: "we have such a high priest, who sat down on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens" (8:1). It calls him "the mediator of a better covenant" (8:6), and then gives words that say, "I will put my laws into their mind; I will also write them on their heart" (8:10).
