Exodus 31 · a question people ask

Is Bezalel's grandfather the Hur who held up Moses' hands?

In the text

The text doesn't say. Bezalel is "the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah" (31:2). A Hur went up the hill with Moses and Aaron, and "Aaron and Hur held up his hands" (17:10-12); on the mountain Moses told the elders, "Aaron and Hur are with you" (24:14). Exodus never says whether these are the same man. Chronicles gives Bezalel's line: "Caleb married Ephrath, who bore him Hur. Hur became the father of Uri, and Uri became the father of Bezalel" (1 Chronicles 2:19-20), but it doesn't connect that Hur to Exodus 17 or 24 either.

The verses

““Behold, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.”
Exodus 31:2 · World English Bible
“So Joshua did as Moses had told him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. When Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed. When he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands were heavy; so they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side. His hands were steady until sunset.”
Exodus 17:10-12 · World English Bible
“He said to the elders, “Wait here for us, until we come again to you. Behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever is involved in a dispute can go to them.””
Exodus 24:14 · World English Bible
“Azubah died, and Caleb married Ephrath, who bore him Hur. Hur became the father of Uri, and Uri became the father of Bezalel.”
1 Chronicles 2:19-20 · World English Bible

From Favor's study of Exodus 31

Exodus 31: Filled with the Spirit to build

The first man the Bible says God filled "with the Spirit of God" is a craftsman, Bezalel, given skill for gold, stone and wood (31:3-5). In the LORD's instructions for the tabernacle, the seventh speech is about the Sabbath, and one Hebrew word names both Bezalel's workmanship and the work that stops. Then come tablets "written with God’s finger" (31:18).
