Deuteronomy 31 · a question people ask

"He will not fail you nor forsake you" (31:6). Can I take that promise as mine?

In the text

In this chapter the words are spoken first to all Israel (31:6) and then to Joshua (31:8), with a task: "He will destroy these nations from before you" (31:3), and "you shall go with this people into the land" (31:7). The letter to the Hebrews gives words close to these to its own readers, in another setting: "Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, ‘I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you’" (Hebrews 13:5). And it draws the answer for them: "So that with good courage we say, ‘The Lord is my helper. I will not fear’" (Hebrews 13:6). Hebrews doesn’t say which verse it is giving; words like these also come to Joshua after Moses dies, "I will not fail you nor forsake you" (Joshua 1:5). So the promise reaches Hebrews’ readers without the Jordan or the nations: what they are given is the LORD’s "he has said", and the courage to say, "I will not fear" (Hebrews 13:5-6). How far each part of a promise given to Israel and Joshua carries over is a wider question Christians answer in more than one way; on this promise, Hebrews has already spoken.

The verses

“The LORD your God himself will go over before you. He will destroy these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess them. Joshua will go over before you, as the LORD has spoken.”
Deuteronomy 31:3 · World English Bible
“Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them, for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.” Moses called to Joshua, and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them; and you shall cause them to inherit it. The LORD himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.””
Deuteronomy 31:6-8 · World English Bible
“Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.” So that with good courage we say, “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?””
Hebrews 13:5-6 · World English Bible
“No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not fail you nor forsake you.”
Joshua 1:5 · World English Bible

Deuteronomy 31: He will not forsake you

"He will not fail you nor forsake you" (31:6) and "This people… will forsake me" (31:16) stand ten verses apart, with the same Hebrew verb. The LORD knew what they would do (31:21), and still the chapter holds the promise that he goes with them, and gives them a song and a book of the law as witnesses (31:19, 31:26).
