Acts 1 · a question people ask

"that he might go to his own place" (1:25). What does that mean?

In the text

The prayer doesn't say. Its words are "to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place" (1:25). It doesn't say what "his own place" is, or where, and Acts says nothing more of it. These notes don't either.

The verses

“They prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two you have chosen to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.””

From Favor's study of Acts 1

Acts 1: Witnesses of his resurrection

The chapter's first words speak of all that Jesus began both to do and to teach "until the day in which he was received up" (1:2), and Peter says that one of the men who had been with them "to the day that he was received up from us" must become "a witness with us of his resurrection" (1:22). In the Greek, received up is the same verb both times.

In Favor, questions like this come up right where they arise as you read, with the Hebrew and Greek behind the words and how the chapter leads to Jesus.
