2 Samuel 7 · a question people ask

Why didn't the LORD let David build the house?

In the text

2 Samuel 7 gives the LORD's own words and no other reason. He asks, "Should you build me a house for me to dwell in?" (7:5), says he has "moved around in a tent and in a tabernacle" (7:6) since he brought Israel out of Egypt, says he never asked anyone for "a house of cedar" (7:7), and says of David's offspring, "He will build a house for my name" (7:13). Other books say more. Solomon sends word to Hiram (1 Kings 5:2) that "David my father could not build a house for the name of the LORD his God because of the wars which were around him on every side" (1 Kings 5:3). In Chronicles, David tells Solomon the LORD's word to him: "You shall not build a house to my name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight" (1 Chronicles 22:8), and he tells the leaders of Israel, "You shall not build a house for my name, because you are a man of war and have shed blood" (1 Chronicles 28:3). Each passage says what it says; 2 Samuel 7 itself gives only the LORD's words above.

The verses

““Go and tell my servant David, ‘The LORD says, “Should you build me a house for me to dwell in? For I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought the children of Israel up out of Egypt, even to this day, but have moved around in a tent and in a tabernacle. In all places in which I have walked with all the children of Israel, did I say a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’”’”

From Favor's study of 2 Samuel 7

2 Samuel 7: The LORD will make you a house

David spoke of the house he lived in and the curtains God's ark was in; the LORD answered that he would make David a house. One Hebrew word, bayit, carries David's house of cedar, the house for the LORD's name and the house the LORD will make for David, 15 times in this one chapter, more than in any other chapter of 1 or 2 Samuel.
