"for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you" (5:18). What is this?

In the text

The verse doesn't spell it out. It says, "In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you." (5:18), right after "Always rejoice. Pray without ceasing." (5:16-17). It doesn't say whether this is giving thanks in everything, or all three of these short words together. These notes don't choose.

1 Thessalonians 5: Always rejoice

1 Thessalonians ends with grace: "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you." (5:28). And near its end it asks its readers to do what it says we did. In 2:11, "we exhorted, comforted"; now they are to "exhort one another" (5:11) and "encourage the faint-hearted" (5:14), with the same two Greek verbs.
