1 Kings 18 · a question people ask
At the brook Kishon (18:40). What does the Bible say about what Elijah did to the prophets of Baal?
After the people say, "The LORD, he is God! The LORD, he is God!" (18:39), Elijah has the prophets of Baal seized and kills them at the brook Kishon (18:40). The chapter tells it in that one verse. It records no word from the LORD about it and gives no verdict on it, and the next chapter opens with Ahab telling Jezebel "how he had killed all the prophets with the sword" (19:1). The law given to Israel speaks of prophets of other gods. Of a prophet who says, "Let’s go after other gods" (Deuteronomy 13:2), it says, "That prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death" (Deuteronomy 13:5), and of the prophet "who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die" (Deuteronomy 18:20). 1 Kings 18 doesn't cite those laws, and these notes say no more than the chapter does. When James and John later asked Jesus, "Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky and destroy them, just as Elijah did?" (Luke 9:54), the fire they spoke of was fire on people, as in 2 Kings, where Elijah says, "let fire come down from the sky and consume you and your fifty" (2 Kings 1:10); on Carmel the fire "consumed the burnt offering" (18:38). Joshua 6's question on Jericho and 1 Samuel 15's on Amalek set out the main ways Christians read the LORD's commands to destroy; 18:40 records no such command.
The verses
“When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said, “The LORD, he is God! The LORD, he is God!” Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Don’t let one of them escape!” They seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.”
“Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.”
“But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.””
“When his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky and destroy them, just as Elijah did?””
