Psalm 88: Day and night before you

Read Psalm 88:1-18 before you meet.

In a few lines

Psalm 88 says three times that the psalmist has called to the LORD, day and night, daily and in the morning (88:1, 88:9, 88:13), each time with a different Hebrew verb. It opens with "the God of my salvation" (88:1), names no enemy and no sin, and ends, in Hebrew as in English, on the word darkness (88:18).

The verse to carry

“But to you, LORD, I have cried. In the morning, my prayer comes before you.”

Psalm 88:13

To talk about

  1. 1. Psalm 88 ends in darkness (88:18), and it is still a prayer, spoken to the LORD from first line to last. What is it like to keep praying when nothing seems to change?

  2. 2. "You have put lover and friend far from me" (88:18). How can a group stay near someone in a season like this, without rushing them to feel better?

  3. 3. The psalmist keeps coming back: day and night, daily, in the morning (88:1, 88:9, 88:13). What helps you keep coming back to God when you don't sense an answer?
