Luke 5: At your word
Read Luke 5:1-39 before you meet.
In a few lines
At Jesus's knees, Simon Peter calls himself "a sinful man", and Jesus answers, "Don’t be afraid." The Greek word behind sinful comes back twice before Luke 5 ends: in the question of the scribes and the Pharisees, "Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?", and in Jesus's own "I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance."
The verse to carry
“I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
Luke 5:32
To talk about
1. Simon said, "Master, we worked all night and caught nothing; but at your word I will let down the net" (5:5). When have you done something only because Jesus said it, and what happened?
2. Simon Peter said, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord" (5:8), and Jesus answered, "Don’t be afraid" (5:10). What makes people want to keep their distance from Jesus, and what do you make of his answer?
3. Levi made a great feast for Jesus in his house, with "a great crowd of tax collectors and others" (5:29). Who could you invite to your table so they can meet Jesus?
