John 21: Follow me

Read John 21:1-25 before you meet.

In a few lines

In the WEB's John, Jesus says "Follow me" to one man in the first chapter, to Philip (1:43), and not again until the last, to Peter (21:19, 21:22). And as John 20 said there were "many other signs" not written (20:30), the book's last verse says, "There are also many other things which Jesus did" (21:25).

The verse to carry

“He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you have affection for me?” Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time, “Do you have affection for me?” He said to him, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.”

John 21:17

To talk about

  1. 1. After a night of catching nothing (21:3), the risen Jesus says, "Come and eat breakfast!" (21:12). What does it mean to you that Jesus met them this way?

  2. 2. Peter asks, "Lord, what about this man?" and Jesus answers, "what is that to you? You follow me." (21:21-22). When do you find yourself looking at someone else's path instead of following Jesus yourself?

  3. 3. Jesus says to Peter, "Follow me" (21:19). As you finish John's Gospel, what would following Jesus look like for you this week?
