Isaiah 8: A sanctuary and a stone

Read Isaiah 8:1-22 before you meet.

In a few lines

In Hebrew, 8:12's "threats" and 8:13's "fear" are one word: don't fear what this people fears; the LORD of Armies is your fear. And the stone both houses of Israel stumble over in 8:14 is the LORD himself, the same LORD who is a sanctuary.

The verse to carry

“I will wait for the LORD, who hides his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.”

Isaiah 8:17

To talk about

  1. 1. In 8:12-13 the LORD says not to fear what the people around you fear, and that he is the one to fear. What fear around you is hardest not to take on as your own?

  2. 2. "I will wait for the LORD, who hides his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him" (8:17). What has helped you keep looking for God in a season when he seemed hidden?

  3. 3. 8:19-20 asks why a people would look anywhere but to their God, and answers, "Turn to the law and to the covenant!" When you need to know what to do, where do you tend to turn first?
