Isaiah 47: Come down and sit in the dust

Read Isaiah 47:1-15 before you meet.

In a few lines

The one who says "I won’t sit as a widow" (47:8) is told first to sit in the dust (47:1): sit comes six times. Her "I am, and there is no one else besides me" (47:8) has three Hebrew words that are all in the LORD's own "there is no one besides me. I am the LORD, and there is no one else" (Isaiah 45:6). And the chapter ends, "There will be no one to save you" (47:15).

The verse to carry

“Our Redeemer, the LORD of Armies is his name, is the Holy One of Israel.”

Isaiah 47:4

To talk about

  1. 1. Among the words spoken to Babylon the chapter sets one line: "Our Redeemer, the LORD of Armies is his name, is the Holy One of Israel" (47:4). What does it mean to you to call the LORD *our Redeemer*?

  2. 2. "You said, ‘I will be a princess forever,’ so that you didn’t lay these things to your heart, nor did you remember the results" (47:7). What helps you think about where the things you do are leading?

  3. 3. The stargazers were called on to "save you from the things that will happen to you" (47:13). When the future feels uncertain, what do people look to, and what do you look to?
