2 Kings 9: Is it peace?

Read 2 Kings 9:1-37 before you meet.

In a few lines

One of the servants calls the prophet "this madman" (9:11), and the watchman says Jehu "drives furiously" (9:20): in Hebrew, both words come from one root. And "Is all well?", "Is it peace?" and Jezebel's "Do you come in peace" are one Hebrew word, asked five times (9:11, 9:17, 9:18, 9:22, 9:31).

The verse to carry

“He arose, and went into the house. Then he poured the oil on his head, and said to him, “The LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘I have anointed you king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel.”

2 Kings 9:6

To talk about

  1. 1. One of the men called the LORD's messenger "this madman" (9:11); then they heard what he had said and acted on it (9:12-13). Why can a word from God sound foolish at first, and what helps you listen past that?

  2. 2. Joram asked, "Is it peace?" and Jehu's answer pointed to what lay underneath (9:22). Is there somewhere you've wanted things to be calm without facing what's underneath?

  3. 3. The LORD's word to Elijah (1 Kings 19:16; 1 Kings 21:21-24) came to pass long after it was spoken, through other people (9:1-3, 9:36). What have you been waiting on God for a long time, and what helps you keep trusting while it seems slow?
