Judges 6 Bible study: The least in my father's house

When Israel cried, the LORD first sent a prophet, whose words end as the angel's did at Bochim: "But you have not listened to my voice" (6:10). Then the LORD's angel called a man hiding his wheat a "mighty man of valor" (6:12), and to "I am the least in my father’s house" (6:15) the LORD answered with the three Hebrew words he said to Moses at the bush: "Surely I will be with you" (6:16).

What's really going on

Seven years under Midian

In the text

The round opens with the book's refrain: "The children of Israel did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, so the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years" (6:1). As at 3:7, there is no again here; at 3:12 and 4:1 there is. Then the chapter shows what the seven years were like. Israel "made themselves the dens which are in the mountains, the caves, and the strongholds" (6:2). When Israel had sown, "the Midianites, the Amalekites, and the children of the east came up against them" (6:3). "They left no sustenance in Israel, and no sheep, ox, or donkey" (6:4). "They came in as locusts for multitude. Both they and their camels were without number" (6:5). "Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to the LORD" (6:6) (tap cried). The chapter says it twice: "When the children of Israel cried to the LORD because of Midian" (6:7).

Where it leads to Jesus

Named among the faithful

In the text

Judges 6:11leads toHebrews 12:2

"His son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites" (6:11). Hebrews names him: "the time would fail me if I told of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets" (Hebrews 11:32). It gives only his name, not an act. Of everyone in its list it says, "These all, having been commended for their faith, didn’t receive the promise" (Hebrews 11:39), and it calls its readers to run "looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith" (Hebrews 12:2).

The Hebrew word behind it

לָבַשׁlavashsay la-VASH

Brown-Driver-Briggs: "put on (a garment), wear, clothe, be clothed". Strong's: "properly, wrap around, i.e. (by implication) to put on a garment or clothe (oneself, or another)". "But the LORD’s Spirit came on Gideon" (6:34). The WEB says came on; the Hebrew verb is the one for putting on clothes, and Brown-Driver-Briggs gives the Spirit's use here as "clothed itself with Gideon". It is the verb of "The LORD God made garments of animal skins for Adam and for his wife, and clothed them" (Genesis 3:21). Judges uses it only here; for Othniel (3:10) and Jephthah (11:29) the book uses another verb. The Hebrew Bible says it of the Spirit only twice more (1 Chronicles 12:18; 2 Chronicles 24:20).

Judges 6 Bible study questions

  1. 1Gideon asked, "If the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us?" (6:13). Have you ever asked God something like that? What did you do with the question?
  2. 2"My family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house" (6:15). The LORD answered, "Surely I will be with you" (6:16). Where do you feel too small for what God may be asking of you?
  3. 3Gideon's first work was at home, at his father's altar, and he did it by night because he was afraid (6:25-27). What would taking God seriously look like first in your own home or circle, and what makes that hard?
