Isaiah 27 Bible study: A pleasant vineyard

In chapter 5 the vineyard would grow briers and thorns and have no rain (5:6). In chapter 27 the LORD says of the vineyard, "I, the LORD, am its keeper. I will water it every moment" (27:3), and after words of battle, "Let him make peace with me" (27:5). At the end Israel is gathered "one by one" (27:12), and at "a great trumpet" those ready to perish and the outcasts come to worship (27:13).

What's really going on

Four times, in that day

In the text

Four verses in this chapter begin with in that day: 27:1 and 27:2 open with the words, and 27:12 and 27:13 open with "It will happen in that day". Each begins a scene. First a sword: "In that day, the LORD with his hard and great and strong sword will punish leviathan, the fleeing serpent, and leviathan, the twisted serpent; and he will kill the dragon that is in the sea" (27:1) (tap leviathan, punish). Then a song: "In that day, sing to her" (27:2). Then a harvest: "It will happen in that day that the LORD will thresh" (27:12). And last a trumpet: "It will happen in that day that a great trumpet will be blown" (27:13). The verse just before the chapter says, "the LORD comes out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity" (Isaiah 26:21), and 27:1 goes on with the same verb. The chapter says what the LORD will do to Leviathan, and doesn't say what Leviathan is.

The Hebrew word behind it

נָצַרnatsarsay na-TSAR

Brown-Driver-Briggs: "watch, guard, keep". Strong's: "to guard, in a good sense (to protect, maintain, obey, etc.)". It comes twice in one verse: "I, the LORD, am its keeper", and "I will keep it night and day" (27:3). The chapter on Isaiah 26 sets out the verb in "You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace" (Isaiah 26:3), where perfect peace is shalom twice. In this chapter shalom comes twice as well, in the LORD's offer: "that he may make peace with me. Let him make peace with me" (27:5). In Isaiah's first chapter the same verb is the WEB's besieged, in a verse that also has a vineyard: "The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a besieged city" (Isaiah 1:8).
