Genesis 40 Bible study: Remember me
In prison Joseph noticed two sad officers and interpreted their dreams, saying, "Don’t interpretations belong to God?" Pharaoh lifted up the cupbearer's head to restore him and the baker's to hang him, just as Joseph said. Joseph asked the cupbearer, "remember me", but he forgot him.

What's really going on
Two officers in the prison
Pharaoh's chief cupbearer and chief baker offend him, and he puts them "into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound" (40:1-3). "The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he took care of them" (40:4). One morning Joseph sees that they are sad and asks, "Why do you look so sad today?" (40:6-7). They have both dreamed, "and there is no one who can interpret it". Joseph answers, "Don’t interpretations belong to God? Please tell it to me" (40:8).

The Hebrew word behind it
פִּתְרוֹןpitronsay pit-ROHN
"Interpretation (of a dream), only Gn 40, 41" (Brown-Driver-Briggs). The noun appears five times, all in Genesis 40 and 41 (40:5, 8, 12, 18; 41:11). Its verb patar, "interpret (dream)" (H6622), appears nine times, and Brown-Driver-Briggs says it too occurs "only Gn 40, 41" (40:8, 16, 22; 41:8, 12, 13, 15). Neither word is used anywhere else in the Hebrew Bible. When the officers say no one can interpret, Joseph answers, "Don’t interpretations belong to God?" (40:8).
