Exodus 10 Bible study: Light in their dwellings

The signs were for Israel's grandchildren as well as for Pharaoh: "that you may tell in the hearing of your son, and of your son’s son" (10:2). Pharaoh bargained over who could go; Moses said, "Not a hoof shall be left behind." And while Egypt sat in a darkness that could be felt, "all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings."

What's really going on

Signs to tell your grandchildren

In the text

The chapter opens with the LORD telling Moses why: "that I may show these my signs among them; and that you may tell in the hearing of your son, and of your son’s son, what things I have done to Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that you may know that I am the LORD" (10:1-2). Earlier, Moses had spoken the words "that you may know" to Pharaoh (8:10, 9:29). Here they are for Israel, and for children not yet born. Exodus comes back to it at the Passover: "You shall tell your son in that day" (13:8).

Where it leads to Jesus

The light of life

Interpretation

Exodus 10:23leads toJohn 8:12

While Egypt sat in darkness, "all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings" (10:23). Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life" (John 8:12), and "I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in the darkness" (John 12:46). Jesus doesn't cite Exodus 10, so setting the two side by side is a reading: some hear in his words the same line drawn between darkness and light; others read them on their own.

The Hebrew word behind it

עָבַדavadsay a-VAD

"Work, serve" (Brown-Driver-Briggs). The verb comes seven times in this chapter, every time about serving the LORD, from "Let my people go, that they may serve me" (10:3) to "we don’t know with what we must serve the LORD, until we come there" (10:26). Pharaoh's "servants" (10:7) are called by the noun Strong's says comes from this verb (H5650). In Exodus 1 the same verb described Israel's slavery: "The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve" (1:13).
