Colossians 3 Bible study: Seek the things that are above
Colossians 3 doesn't only say "seek the things that are above" (3:1). It goes on, "For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God." (3:3). And of all it tells them to put on, it sets one above the rest: "Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection." (3:14).

What's really going on
Seek the things that are above
The chapter opens with If then: "If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God." (3:1) (tap seek). "Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth." (3:2) (tap Set your mind). The next verse begins with For: "For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God." (3:3) (tap hidden). "When Christ, our life, is revealed, then you will also be revealed with him in glory." (3:4). These notes say no more of what is above, of where Christ is, or of when he is revealed than these verses say.

Strong's: "to exercise the mind, i.e. entertain or have a sentiment or opinion". "Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth." (3:2): behind Set your mind is this verb, and Colossians has it only here (in all eight editions TAGNT compares). The verse before has another verb, seek (tap seek). Romans has this one in "For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit." (Romans 8:5). Favor's Matthew 16 and 2 Corinthians 13 study it too, where the WEB gives it as setting your mind and Be of the same mind.
