2 John 1 Bible study: Walking in truth

In 2 John, will be with us stands in two verses side by side: "it will be with us forever" (1:2), and "Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us" (1:3). And the Greek word behind paper in "with paper and ink" (1:12) stands nowhere else in the New Testament.

What's really going on

The elder

In the text

2 John opens, "The elder, to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not I only, but also all those who know the truth" (1:1) (tap love and truth). It goes on, "for the truth’s sake, which remains in us, and it will be with us forever" (1:2). Then comes the greeting: "Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love." (1:3) (tap mercy). Beyond "The elder" (1:1), the letter gives no name for its I, and these notes give none. They say nothing about who wrote it, to whom, when or where, beyond the letter's own words.
