Song of Solomon 2 · a question people ask
What are "the little foxes" of 2:15?
The verse says what they do, not what they stand for: "Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that plunder the vineyards; for our vineyards are in blossom" (2:15) (tap foxes). It is said to more than one, and it speaks as us and our; the verse doesn't say who. In blossom is one Hebrew word, semadar, the word of "The vines are in blossom" (2:13) two verses before, and the Hebrew Bible has it only in the Song. The Song doesn't explain the foxes, and these notes don't either; they don't make them a picture of anything.
The verses
“The fig tree ripens her green figs. The vines are in blossom. They give out their fragrance. Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.””
“Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that plunder the vineyards; for our vineyards are in blossom.”
