Psalm 45 · a question people ask

Who is the queen, and who is the daughter?

In the text

The psalm doesn't name them. It says, "At your right hand the queen stands in gold of Ophir" (45:9) (tap queen). Then someone speaks to a woman: "Listen, daughter, consider, and turn your ear. Forget your own people, and also your father’s house" (45:10), "So the king will desire your beauty, honor him, for he is your lord" (45:11) (tap honor). Then it tells of "The princess" (45:13): "She shall be led to the king in embroidered work" (45:14), with "The virgins, her companions who follow her" (45:14). The New Testament quotes 45:6-7 (Hebrews 1:8-9) and doesn't quote these verses or say who she is. These notes don't either.

The verses

“Kings’ daughters are among your honorable women. At your right hand the queen stands in gold of Ophir. Listen, daughter, consider, and turn your ear. Forget your own people, and also your father’s house. So the king will desire your beauty, honor him, for he is your lord.”
Psalm 45:9-11 · World English Bible
“The princess inside is all glorious. Her clothing is interwoven with gold. She shall be led to the king in embroidered work. The virgins, her companions who follow her, shall be brought to you.”
Psalm 45:13-14 · World English Bible
“But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your Kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows.””
Hebrews 1:8-9 · World English Bible

From Favor's study of Psalm 45

Psalm 45: Your throne is forever

"Grace has anointed your lips" (45:2) and "God, your God, has anointed you" (45:7) are two Hebrew verbs: the first is yatsaq, to pour. The king is told to ride "on behalf of truth, humility, and righteousness" (45:4). And Hebrews gives 45:6-7 "of the Son" (Hebrews 1:8).
