Psalm 123 · a question people ask
Does the LORD answer the plea in this psalm?
The psalm doesn't say. It says the eyes look to the LORD "until he has mercy on us" (123:2), and it asks, "Have mercy on us, LORD, have mercy on us" (123:3). Then it ends with what the speakers have endured: "with the contempt of the proud" (123:4). The psalm's four verses are the looking and the asking. These notes don't add an answer the psalm doesn't give.
The verses
“Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD, our God, until he has mercy on us. Have mercy on us, LORD, have mercy on us, for we have endured much contempt. Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scoffing of those who are at ease, with the contempt of the proud.”
