Psalm 118 · a question people ask
"Hosanna!" Is that from this psalm?
When Jesus came into Jerusalem, the crowds cried, "Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!" (Matthew 21:9). In Mark they cried, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" (Mark 11:9), and in John, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!" (John 12:13). The words after Hosanna are this psalm's "Blessed is he who comes in the LORD’s name!" (Psalm 118:26), worded a little differently in the WEB. None of these verses explains the word Hosanna. In the psalm, the line before 118:26 is "Save us now, we beg you, LORD!" (Psalm 118:25), and in Hebrew Save … now is hoshi'ah na (tap Save). These notes don't compare the Greek, so they don't say whether or how Hosanna and hoshi'ah na are related.
