Psalm 101 · a question people ask
"I will destroy all the wicked of the land" (101:8). Isn't that harsh?
Read what the verse says: "Morning by morning, I will destroy all the wicked of the land, to cut off all the workers of iniquity from the LORD’s city" (101:8). It is the speaker's resolve, in the first person, like every line after the first. Destroy here is the same Hebrew verb as silence in "I will silence whoever secretly slanders his neighbor" (101:5) (tap silence). The psalm doesn't say how this is done, and it doesn't name anyone. It gives no command to anyone else. Psalm 94 says it of the LORD: "The LORD, our God, will cut them off" (Psalm 94:23), where cut them off is the verb of 101:8's destroy, twice in the verse (101:8's own cut off is another Hebrew verb). These notes don't apply the verse to any ruler, nation or people today.
